Artist’s Statement
I view art as essentially a personal and spiritual connection between the self and life – one in which the language can be formal or figurative, primitive, intuitive. There are no rules. The artist is free to express and interpret his experience as he sees fit, hopefully communicating and sharing that experience with others.
For me, the craft of painting is more than the patient working, studying, breaking down subjects into smaller parts and putting them back together. It is the accumulation of sensations in me, the organization of my own personal chaos. I sift through a multitude of feelings, thoughts and connections, tapping into the unconscious, not knowing what or where it’s going to lead me. It leads me to expanded creativity, greater skills, to new heights in all the areas of my life, and ultimately to art.
Profile and Exhibition Record
Kevin McCarty paints landscapes, portraits, and still life. Stylistically, he extends himself into abstract expressionism. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he has resided in various parts of the country, including Atlanta, Dallas, Clearwater, and New York City. On scholarship, he studied at the Atlanta School of Art in his earliest years. Traveling throughout the United States and Europe, he furthered his education, obtaining first-hand knowledge of the major schools of painting.
During his time in New York City, he expanded on his work, having been exposed to the galleries, incredible art museums, and the stimulating, enervating, everyday environment that is New York. He studied Meisner technique for 2 years and was an actor in various media. He worked in theatre, films, and television. He expressed another part of himself in acting, having an immediacy in the moment, an expression that included the other person rather than the solitary aspects of painting.
Painting for over 40 years, McCarty works span from easel size to murals, both commissioned and non-commissioned, and are in private and public collections. Cincinnati, Tampa, Atlanta, and New York have enjoyed his exhibits.
